“I go into barns not because I grew up on a farm or that I feel they represent some kind of ideal Americana, I seek barns because they are real. The working barns, not the tarted up storage spaces or the “rustic” wedding venues, but the barns that still house cows, horses or some other beasts. In the over curated suburban world I live in, real spaces are very hard to find. Barns have become my refuge from the current bizarre world we live in.

I find solace in the grimy, dark, odorous spaces. I paint there because I am mostly alone, no one to ask questions, provide opinions or spin facts.

The patina left by hundreds of years of moving animals and hard use was not put there to please the senses but it sure activates mine. The designs, functional and spare, built and maintained with what was at hand. The shapes made by the light just seem right.”
