About

Tina Ingraham, a Maine-based figurative painter, travels internationally painting portrait commissions, researching master paintings and exhibiting her work. Ingraham lived and painted in Italy and traveled Europe to study master paintings integral to her work, from 1999 to 2003. She received a Maine Commission for the Arts Project Grant, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, and fellowships from Milton and Sally Avery and John Simon Guggenheim Foundations.

She has taught at Bowdoin College, Stephens College, Maine College of Art and Brooklyn College where she received The Charles G. Shaw Teaching Fellowship and Award for Excellence. Collected internationally, Ms. Ingraham has exhibited predominantly in New York, Boston, Maine, Delaware, Connecticut, Italy and Germany. She is represented at Greenhut Galleries, Portland, Maine, and Somerville Manning in Greenville, Delaware. Portrait commissions of note include Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain by Bowdoin College, and Myron Edward Ullman III Private Collection of Thirteen Portraits. Ingraham works from her studio in Bath, Maine.

“A look through a viewfinder divides my vision of the subject into fractions and I clearly see where strong contrasts meet. I mark those on the canvas with charcoal. I grind paint onto the palette with my knife, and with broad brushstrokes I weave large amounts over the canvas with a hunt for an overall spirit. Varied textures describe my search for spacial relationships. Distance or foreground is implied with thin washes or scraped off paint. Thick paint may identify form, middle ground or detail. As I filter through cognitive, physical and intuitive practices, my engagement with the work ceases being a record of my process. The painting materializes with a spirit of its own.”
