Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Henry James Soulen was a distinguished illustrator. He joined the Art Students League in Milwaukee, the Art Institute of Chicago, and later studied under Howard Pyle, the founder of the Brandywine School. Soulen began his career in 1912, illustrating for The Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, Ladies Home Journal, Delineator, and National Geographic, and received the Peabody Award for his magazine cover designs. He was well-known for intense color as well as specializing in Asian subjects (viewed through an American cultural lens), and for depictions of Palestine and Egypt for Dr. Fosdick’s popular book “A Pilgrimage to Palestine.” He exhibited throughout his career and taught at the University of Maryland.
