Charles Burchfield was a master of watercolor and has been described as a social critic, naturalist, and transcendental visionary. His work encompasses emotionally-charged landscapes and joyful, brooding, often fantastic, and closely observed American Scene paintings. He combined an almost fauvist use of color with experiments involving the depiction of the sounds of nature mixed with personal moods.
