About
A student of the Impressionist William Merritt Chase, Henry Grinnell Thomson became a professional artist at the age of 35, when he moved to Wilton, Connecticut and became active in the Silvermine Guild of Artists. It was in this pastoral surrounding that he adopted a higher-key Impressionist strategy. He was influenced by fellow Connecticut artists J. Alden Weir and Willard Metcalf, especially in the palette and broken brushwork. His palette brightened and became energetic, and he began to produce lyrical, broadly brushed canvases. He was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design and at the Society of Independent Artists.
