John Marin studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Art Students League in New York, and in Paris. His work has been exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, and the Institute of Modern Art in Boston.
Marin is known for his distinctive style of bold, energetic watercolors. Influenced by Cézanne, futurism, and Orphic cubism, he drew his imagery directly from nature, but always sought to capture its spirit and imagery rather than merely imitate it. He used this fluid, spontaneous medium of watercolor to abstract from objects – a simplified anatomy of color and form to define movement in relation to objects. The energy and gestural quality of his work has exerted a great influence on abstract expressionism.
